Hopeful. Ready.

These 3 words sum up my feelings on the first day of 2017. In southern California, last of day 2016 looked like so many of us were feeling during the final months of last year- gloomy, stormy, dark, with tiny specks of sunlight doing their best to break through the rain. But, in the morning, on this first day of a brand new year, the sun couldn’t be brighter with blue skies for miles.

Something about the sunshine and the new beginning bring out a special energy in me. I feel supercharged, like I could take off if someone gave me wings. I started laughing at the thought of me feeling like I could fly and begging for someone to just give me a set of wings so I could get off the ground. Isn’t that familiar? So many of us are looking to another person for that thing to get us to the next level, next position, next, well, you fill in the blank. We have the desire, discipline and drive but we are looking to the wrong source to move us forward.

2017 will be a year of using this supercharged energy to praise God, seek Him, listen to Him and follow His lead. The best lesson I learned over the past year of life is that when I make my relationship with God my first priority, He moves me forward. I’m expecting the best for me and my family this year despite the uncertainty surrounding me. Instead of looking to another person to help get me off the ground, I’m choosing to know Him more. Am I saying that I expect a year of perfection, without challenge, where I get everything I want? Of course not!! But, I am eagerly expecting a year of surprises, passion, love, promotion and opportunity because of a deeper relationship with God, a desire to walk out His purpose for me and willingness to wait on His perfect timing.

Excited. Hopeful. Ready….Thankful. Thankful that God is in control. Thankful that He can see it all, from beginning to end. Thankful that He sees me, knows me and loves me. And you. Let’s know Him better and let Him walk us through this amazing new year.

I literally can’t stand it. So much that sometimes, ok maybe almost all the time, I will push myself to do something that I know isn't a good idea and I end up prolonging the injury.

This past week, I have had to rest due to a lower back injury. I taught my cardio kickboxing class Monday night, but since then, I have not lifted or done any cardio. I knew I needed a minimum of 5 full rest days. This time, instead of pushing myself too hard or going crazy because I was limited as far as my physical activity, I decided to look at rest in a new way. This acronym really helped me this week and hopefully, it will help you when you find yourself having to REST!

R- Relax!
We live in a world where our norm is to wake up, go and never stop until you have to sleep again. During your forced rest period, set aside time to pause from the crazy norm and appreciate all you have! IF you are like me, all of a sudden you have an extra 60 minutes in your day that you would have spent at the gym. Take at least 30 minutes of that hour to chill out, read a book, call a friend, listen to new music or just sit and be thankful. Its amazing how taking 30 minutes to unwind can take you from feeling tense and uptight to loose and appreciative!

E- Eat well
Many times, when people take time off the gym, they find themselves taking a pause on healthy eating choices too! Don’t fall victim to the extra pounds that creep on when your eating habits fall apart. Instead of thinking, “I can’t workout so why do anything else?” you should be telling yourself this- “I may not be able to do my workouts but I’m going to do everything else that I can do to the best of my ability.” Staying consistent with your good eating habits will not only have you feeling great during your activity break, it will also keep you looking great until you are able to go back to regular workout schedule.

S- Stay POSITIVE!
With rest periods due to injury lasting for a week or more, you may have some days when you feel like you will never be back to normal again!! This is when you have to tell yourself (with a smile on your face) that this is temporary, and if you rest (and follow Dr.’s orders if you have any) you will heal and be better than before. Half of the injury is dealing with your thoughts. When your thoughts head towards the negative side, remind yourself that this to will pass and that your amazing body will be back to normal with time.

T- Test
When your prescribed rest is complete, get back in the gym for a “test” day. Usually, I like to do some type of full body circuit training workout with lighter weight. This allows me to get a great workout in while checking to make sure that I can complete a variety of movements without pain. If your test day doesn’t go so well and you feel like you need more rest, that’s OK! Just be sure to plan a date for your next test day and go for it again.
Following this new way of looking at rest should help you to stay on track, stay positive and continue to be the best you ever!!!

Until next time…
The ingredients are simple, healthy, colorful and easy to get year round. Here is my version of Chicken and Corn Salad with Curry dressing-

You NEED:
4 oz cooked, chopped chicken breast
1-2 tsp of raisins
1 to 1 ½ cups of arugula
¼ cup shredded carrots
Chopped red onion to taste
1/4 cup corn (cut from the cob is best, but canned and rinsed is ok)
For dressing:
1 ½ Tbsp olive oil
2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
¼ tsp curry powder
¼ tsp honey

What you DO:
Put all salad ingredients (chicken, down to corn) in a large bowl. Set aside. Get a small mason jar or little Tupperware with a lid to mix dressing ingredients. Put all dressing ingredients in container. Shake it really good!!!! Pour on salad. ENJOY!

This salad is wonderful for lunch or dinner on the go! If you want to, enjoy with a slice of toast (in my case gluten-free) or throw it in a pita pocket for a tasty sandwich!
One of the other teachers at my school had a phrase that she used frequently in her classroom to encourage the kids, letting them know that she believed in their abilities and they should too! If they struggled with an assignment, she would say “You got this!” and then give them some extra help time. If they shared a personal struggle, she would say “You got this!” and let them know she was there if they needed to talk or needed additional support. It was awesome because near the middle of that first year that she began to use this phrase, you would hear our students using the phrase to encourage each other. “You got this” became a way that everyone shared encouragement, support and motivation. Three simple words and an example from one person spread through a campus and changed the way students handled challenging moments.

Have you been hitting a few challenging moments in your fitness journey? Maybe it’s a lack of drive and determination, maybe the busyness of life is making it hard to be consistent with your workouts, maybe you don’t think you can come back because you just haven’t done anything fitness related in SO long…Well, let me tell you today YOU GOT THIS!!

Every day is a new one, matter of fact EACH moment is NEW and an opportunity for you to make changes in your fitness journey. Just like the awesome teacher from my story, I will not just TELL you that you got this and clap for you and then leave. I want to encourage you to take steps to make the change that you want to see. It doesn’t matter how far you are from your goal, or what decisions you used to make! You can begin to change for the better NOW, today. I believe in you! I believe in your abilities! I believe that step by step, you can become the best version of you that you have ever seen and felt! Remember, there are MANY ways to get to a healthy result. Choose something that you love, or at least like, when choosing a fitness activity. Don’t listen to anyone who insists that their way is the only way. While there are common principles like making beneficial food choices, being active and incorporating strength training, there are ENDLESS programs that bring these principles together in fun and creative ways.

Once you get back in your groove, don’t stop with just feeling good by yourself. Go out and encourage others! Share your story, encourage friends and family with your words and your example. Remember, it’s not about being perfect…THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE! So take the pressure off and don’t hold yourself to an unattainable standard. Do your best with what you can. Share smiles and encouragement. Be real and honest in your journey. Remember that the most powerful examples often come from the most vulnerable moments.

Get up, get back on track, because you are worth it and…YOU GOT THIS!
What's sad is that so many start strong, but may not have the tools to actually make the positive changes stick. Here are 3 things you can do to really make a new you this new year.

1. Make CONSISTENCY your main goal
It’s awesome to have a weight goal, an inches goal or a strength goal but realistically, you will never reach those goals unless you are daily working towards them. When you look at it like this, the MOST important part of any goal is consistency. Instead of making the main thing a change in your appearance, set your main goal to daily follow your plan or program. If you do this, your body will change, good habits will be formed AND your measurement of success is based on whether or not you did your best that day! I have found that there is a beautiful freedom in basing your goal outside a number on the scale. When I have practiced this in my own life, I see results faster and I feel great about myself in the process.

2. The BEST workout is the one that you’ll actually do
I get questions all the time about new workout or eating trends. The most common question is, “Jada, does it really work?” My answer is always YES! Every plan or program on the market can benefit your body. The only time plans don’t work is when they are not followed. There is always going to be some new best ever workout trend, but don't feel like you have to jump on it! Choose a program that contains something you actually like to do, doesn't matter if it’s the new thing or the old thing! What matters is that your program contains these 3 elements: strength training, cardiovascular training and eating guidance of some kind. If you find something that you like to do with those 3 elements, your success rate will be sky high. Not every plan will align with how you may want your body to look, your likes or your personal healthy food preferences. Check out the details of a few different programs to find something with components that fit your style. Keep in mind that every program will have its challenging moments and that you might not LOVE everything about it. Your aim should be to have something in your plan that you can look forward to doing. Consider activities that you like (dancing, running, swimming, etc) and environments you like (being by yourself, outdoors, indoors, in groups, with a trainer, etc). Set yourself up to enjoy your workouts, not dread them.

3. Make it your job to INSPIRE others
Every time you go into a class, the gym or wherever you work out, decide that you will set the tone for everyone else. Decide that you will be the hardest working, happiest, most dedicated person there. This is not a competition, but an opportunity to encourage and inspire. Everyone pauses for a moment and looks around, searching for someone working hard enough to inspire them to finish the workout they’ve started. I’ve had those moments and I’m sure you have as well. Make it your business to be the person someone sees and because of you, they are motivated to not just finish, but finish well.

Let’s start this year strong together! Remember these tips and make New Year, New You happen.
DTM stood for “doing the most” with each post highlighting a certain scenario or situation and ridiculous actions surrounding it. For example #DTM at the gym talked about the people that we ALL see at the gym…the guy grunting louder than a gorilla, the girl sitting at each strength training machine talking on her cell phone, the chic taking WAY too many bathroom selfies (totally making fun of myself), that silent but deadly farter on the leg press! All of the examples were given in fun, but it was clear the YOU never wanted to be caught #DTM!!

In a lot of cases, doing the most is NOT something positive but there are ALWAYS exceptions to every rule.

I was having a few thoughts today about where I am in life. It’s easy to get stuck in your thoughts, especially if you are thinking about things you thought you would have already done by now, or why you think you should have been farther along in certain areas. Many times, these types of moments can deflate us and cause us to use precious time and energy focusing on things that we should’ve, could’ve, would’ve done but in reality cannot change. When you find yourself lost in these thoughts you NEED a little #DTM…Let me explain.

The best way to get your mind off of what could have done is to get your mind ON doing the MOST with what you have! Literally ask yourself (and answer HONESTLY) if you are doing the most with your job, with the opportunities you have, with your relationship…basically plug in any area of life and then CHECK yourself to see if you are making the most of it! Instead of focusing on where you WANT or THOUGHT you would be, try these 3 things and actually take steps towards your goals!

1. Do the MOST to prepare- Try looking at your life from a training and preparation viewpoint. What do you have that you can use as preparation for your next step? For example, one of my goals is to do more public speaking surrounding health, nutrition and fitness. I have been invited to a handful of speaking opportunities over the past few years, but not nearly as many as I thought I would have. I can do the most by using every talking opportunity I have with anyone as practice for what I believe is coming.

2. Do the MOST and speak up- Get over your fear and put your goal out there! Not that you need to brag or be obnoxious about what you are working towards but you DO need to let select people know what you desire to accomplish. If I never make it known that public speaking is a goal, then I will never have the opportunity to be invited to speak somewhere. If you never talk about your goal, no one will ever know how they can help you get there.

3. Do the MOST and say YES- If you are given an opportunity do to something that lines up with your goal, TAKE IT! Many of us wait for what seems like the perfect opportunity, passing up the less glamorous or less notable opportunities we are given. Funny thing is, the most successful people will tell you that there was NEVER just one defining moment or opportunity. It’s always a series of small “yes” moments that lead to what seems like an overnight explosion of recognition and opportunity. My point is, appreciate every opportunity given to you and use it! You never know who is listening or watching.

So, maybe it’s ok to do the MOST. Well, only as long as you are relating the #DTM to your goals and not farting on the leg press.
You showed up. You got through it. But it wasn’t GREAT. Matter of fact, you just went through the motions and you’re not even sure if your time was spent well…and that SUCKS. Here are 3 things you can do to make sure you get the MOST out of your workout EVERY time!

1. Get RID of your biggest distractions!
Phone doesn’t stop? TURN IT OFF (it’s only for 30-60 minutes). Can’t get the laundry or dirty dishes off your mind? GET OUT OF THE HOUSE. Kids are jumping on you during your abs set? GET TO A GYM WITH A KIDS CLUB. We all are juggling a lot but in order to make this workout time count, you must be able to focus your energy on workout! Do what you need to clear your mind and silence your biggest distractions. You will thank yourself for it later.

2. Get around people working HARDER than you!
If you do your workouts outside your house, make sure you are surrounding yourself with other people who are giving their all! Find the FRONT of the group exercise class. Find the popular workout places in your neighborhood…a known set of stairs, open track, park or beachfront. If you are working out at home, choose a youtube, DVD, or streaming class where you can SEE other people working hard, sweating and loving it! Make sure there is something that challenges you to be your best.

3. Always add in SOMETHING YOU LOVE!
You don’t have to always love your workouts. You DO need to always add in some component that you LOVE OR something that INSPIRES you to keep going. Make sure you have 3-4 of your ultimate, favorite songs sprinkled into your playlist. Go to that class you love because the teacher is awesome. Make Saturday mornings your “track workout” day because you LOVE the crisp morning air and the sun peaking out onto the grass, track and stairs (that’s what I do LOL). There MUST be something that makes you smile, take a moment to be thankful and then go back to kicking butt.
I’m addicted to popcorn. I guess technically now I am just a popcorn lover.

Why is this important you ask? Well, because this revelation…admitting this revelation has helped me to grow and may just help you too.
I like to think that I have become really good at keeping balance in my life as it pertains to fitness, health and eating. I have worked very hard to learn to live a fit lifestyle as opposed to being on some sort of diet all the time. I just couldn’t kick the popcorn habit. And, by habit I mean that I would eat 2 large bowls of air popped popcorn with olive oil and some sea salt in one sitting, every day or every other day. But usually every day.

You may be thinking, “Is she serious right now? This is a non-issue” or you might be thinking, “I can’t believe she eats that much in one sitting. She must be crazy”…remember it’s all relative. My popcorn issue might be your chocolate issue or your fill in the blank of whatever you just can’t control yourself with issue. We all have something we struggle with that is holding us back from feeling and looking our best.

I didn’t decide on my own that I was going to admit that I had a popcorn problem. Matter of fact, I was ignoring the issue because I like popcorn so much. I decided that it was easier to tell myself that because it was air popped popcorn with only a LITTLE oil and salt, it didn’t matter how much I ate. As if any amount would be acceptable. Like many others, I had to have that awkward and usually uncomfortable moment where someone else (someone who loves you and wants the best for you) points out your issue.

Here’s where the growing and learning part comes in. Remember this is all assuming the person pointing out your issue knows you, loves you and wants only the best for you. There are 2 parts to this--

Part 1: LISTEN to what you hear.
Sometimes, when I am being corrected especially by someone close to me, my first instinct is to block it out. I don’t know anyone who naturally LOVES being corrected! I have to make a conscious decision to LISTEN, understanding that this could be an opportunity to make myself a better person. Choose to hear the critique or correction and let it sink in BEFORE you respond. Most of the time, there is truth behind what you are hearing. When you choose to hear from a loving standpoint, there is no room for guilt, shame or any other negative feeling. Listening sets the stage for a positive interaction and gets you on your way to being your best!

Part 2: ACT NOW.
Once you realize and admit your issue (with food or anything else), come up with an action step that you can do THAT DAY…even better if you can start that moment. This can be small, and honestly, sometimes a small non-drastic step is the best. It’s not about an overhaul, but it IS about taking continuous steps in the right direction. In my situation, my husband recommended that I switch to a smaller popcorn bowl. I just about lost my mind for a minute, but then a realized that was a GREAT first step. It’s been a week and I actually like my new popcorn bowl. I am also on my second step of NO REFILLS HA!

Change is never comfortable. It’s not supposed to be. But, the more comfortable you become with the uncomfortable, the faster you will get to being your best self ever.
It was absolutely perfect for after the holiday. Thanksgiving is no holiday where I don't limit myself with the types of food I am eating. My only guideline is that I can't come home stuffed to the point where it's painful! I had everything from turkey to mac and cheese to pumpkin pie yesterday...just made sure I could still walk after. Today, I have been eating and will continue to eat VERY clean and I am actually going a little lighter on my protein and increasing fibrous veggies. Of course I'm downing as much water as I can get!!

Here is the workout:

FULL BODY CIRCUIT
Squat Jump on Bench- 16 jumps alternate legs stepping down from bench if you want
Dumbbell Bent Over Row- 20x
Alternating Jump Lunge- 30 total
Push ups- 20x
Barbell Squat- 20x
Mid-stance Jump Squat- 25x
Plank- 30 sec hold
Reverse Alternating Lunge w/weight- 15 per leg
Reverse Lunge Knee up- bodyweight only, 15 per side, do all R side then all L side
Bench Dip (Triceps)- 20x
Twisting Crunch w/weight- 20x
Burpee- 12x
1 min sprint on tredmill- 2x
REST 2 minutes

Do the entire circuit 3x through. Took me about 50 minutes. Have fun!

Until next time,
The road was wide open, my favorite worship song blasting through my speakers and I headed to my first fitness photo shoot since the birth of my second son…

Rewind to July 2014 when I made the commitment to myself to be photo shoot ready by the time I turned 33. My 2nd child had just turned 4 months old, I was still breastfeeding and I was staring at my body daily wondering when I would look and feel “normal” again. I started slow, committing to 3 days a week of some kind of exercise. I didn’t even worry about my eating at that time because I felt like I needed to take it one step at a time. Little by little my body started to change.

In August 2014, I decided that I needed to add a new layer to the goal. I committed to doing some kind of exercise 5 days a week and allowing myself 2-3 treat meals a week. I was beginning to transition out of breastfeeding and had a little bit more flexibility in my schedule. My husband supported me by making sure he was available to watch our boys so that I could get to the gym. I remembered how my fitness journey looked and felt like with my first baby. I was stressed, I put a ton a pressure on myself and I over worked myself. I decided that this time, I would reach my goals without stressing myself out. My schedule was doable, with room for error and correction. Each time I looked at myself from here on out, I decided to smile…not because I LOVED what I saw, but because I knew that every day was a step in the right direction. With the increased commitment, my body changed a little more.

September 2014 brought another level of commitment. I got organized, continued with my 5 workouts per week but focused on consistent weight training. I did cardio when I could, but didn’t stress out if I didn’t get it perfect. I was able to consistently get at least 2 cardio workouts in per week. I cut out the extra sugar (I was putting about a ¼ teaspoon in my coffee or adding a shot of vanilla syrup if I bought a latte) and cut my treat meals down to one a week. A normal eating day looked like this--- breakfast: slice of wheat toast with ¼ avocado and 4 scrambled egg whites with Tapatio, snack: 3 boiled egg whites and 1 apple, lunch: 4 oz chicken with 4 oz yams and 1 cup kale, snack: 3 oz chicken, 1 cup carrots, 2 Tbsp hummus, snack: protein shake with water, dinner: 4 oz fish or chicken, 2 cups lettuce, chopped bell pepper, onion, cabbage, 2 Tbsp raisins, homemade dressing. If I was really hungry after dinner, I would have greek yogurt and berries or an apple and 1 Tbsp peanut butter. Every so often, I would have an extra treat meal, especially if I was craving something specific. I kept my focus on doing each day well, but once again didn’t stress myself. I lost 6 pounds that month.

I continued the same eating and exercise routine during the month of October. The biggest change during October was the addition of the “4 am workout.” In the previous months, I was doing my workouts late at night, after my boys were in bed and during the late morning on the weekends. This month, I decided to start getting up at 4am and going straight to the gym so I could get my workouts done and get them out of the way. I found that this time was wonderful for me! I felt like it was MY time…the gym was empty, I had more energy and killed every workout. By the end of October, I lost an additional 4 pounds.

At the beginning of November, I booked my photo shoot. I work very well with concrete goals and the shoot was a way to reward myself for consistency. After my first pregnancy, I set a goal to compete in a bodybuilding show 6 month after my son’s birth. Although I’m glad I set and achieved that goal, getting “show ready” was something that I didn’t want to rush this time. The goal of a photo shoot gave me something to work for without the pressure of getting super small. I continued with my same eating and exercise routine (I use variety in the exercises I do, just stick with the same day by day split). Part of my goal was to be able to feel confident and look my best at the photo shoot while not over dieting. I kept my treat meal every week, only did not have any desserts. By photo shoot day, I lost an additional 5 pounds.

Back to the open road and my favorite worship song blasting through my speakers…I exited Roscoe on the 405. A few turns later, I was parked in front of the studio. The feeling that I had on the inside was magnified by the camera and joy filled each shot. I reached a goal. But, that goal doesn’t signify the end of a journey, it marks the beginning of a new adventure. I smile when I think about the future, when I think about the next challenge. My 33rd birthday is in 1 week. I love myself, I’m choosing to focus on what I CAN do instead of anything else and I am proud of my progress. I feel like I’m at my best, not because I look perfect but because I’m taking care of this amazing body God gave me. To all the moms out there…YOU CAN get your body back. YOU CAN find the time. YOU ARE WORTH the effort. Hopefully my journey encourages you to stay consistent and keep smiling.

Until next time,
I was rushing to get to my favorite kickboxing class…the one that I rarely ever get to go to because of our crazy work schedules. My husband and I park tandem, so I just jumped in the car that was available, turned the key and zoomed off.

It took me about 2 blocks to realize I wasn’t listening to music, but to a voice, a very excited one with a slight country accent. A few seconds later, I figured out that I was listening to Zig Ziglar (the motivational speaker). My husband must have been listening to this before he got out of the car. I was going to turn it off but then for some reason decided to leave it on.
Ziglar told the story of a little girl, walking onto a plane and seeing the cockpit for the first time. At the sight of all the controls and electronics, she was in awe and gasped “Goshhhhhhhh!”

After the story, he posed a question to his audience asking when was their last GOSH moment. Then he challenged them by asking if they even realize their GOSH moments…

Got me thinking.

How many GOSH moments do I miss? How many GOSH moments do I take for granted? How many opportunities do I pass up that could create a GOSH moment for someone else?

A whole list of moments flashed in my brain. GOSH, my husband is amazing. He loves me, he is faithful, he is a helpful, loving father…and he is so handsome! GOSH, my mom is such a blessing to me and my family. She watches my boys for 2 days out of the week so I can continue to work. GOSH, I am healthy. I can get up, run around, workout or whatever I need to do!! GOSH, I have Jesus. I don’t know how I would get through each day without His love and guidance through His word. Those are just a few, but I could go on for quite a while.

Needless to say, my kickboxing workout that night was amazing. Every kick and punch had a little extra gratefulness on it…
Hopefully, you take a few seconds to think about and be thankful for the things that make you go “GOSH!”

Until next time,
For example, "I can't find time", "I am too tired to move", "I don't like working out", "There is no program that fits my needs", etc. I have actually been one of those people at times! Focusing on our excuses or even legitimate reasons why we are struggling with proper eating or consistency on a workout routine, can cause us to feel bogged down, upset or even disappointed in ourselves. My advice is to SWITCH YOUR FOCUS!

Instead of focusing in on and magnifying our "cannot's" choose to focus in on and magnify your "can's." It's amazing how this small change can take you from possibly beating yourself up to celebrating your successes! Yesterday, I was having a tough day at work. I teach middle school PE full time, and while most of the time my students are wonderful, yesterday a few of them truly challenged my patience. I won't go into detail, but I will tell you by the end of the school day I was more than ready to go. From there I drove an hour to go pick up my kids from the sitter and then after that drove another hour to get home. I could have very easily focused on a number of "cannot's" like "I can't workout, I'm exhausted", "My students are driving me crazy, so I don't want a salad, I want ice cream", "I have spent over 3 hours in the car today so I can't possibly drive again to get to the gym"...but I chose instead to focus on my "can's." I kept thinking about how I am going to get 30 minutes in at the gym and have that time for me. I thought about how blessed I am to be able to move and exercise because not everyone has that ability. I told myself that even though ice cream sounded good, I know that I'm going to feel great eating the healthy options that I prepared earlier for myself. Magnifying the positive things changed my night. I didn't get to the gym until about 9:15pm, but when I left at 10pm, I felt amazing. I shared a genuine (although tired) smile with everyone that passed by. I felt like a winner.

Now it's your turn. Choose at least one "can" to focus on and magnify today. Watch your day and your health routine change for the better.

Stay encouraged.
I train 2-3 fitness clients per week.

I teach at least 2 aerobics classes per week.

Life is FULL.

Sometimes I look at my "list" and I have no idea how I am going to get everything done AND fit in my own workouts on top of it all. Days and weeks can become overwhelming and when I think about all the details, driving, cooking, cleaning, and managing that goes into one week, sometimes I feel like my brain is going to explode.

It's interesting, but I have found that during the busiest times in my life, I have needed fitness the most. It's crazy how we can rationalize ourselves out of our workout time; saying things like, "I'm too tired", "I don't have time",when actually we will feel even more productive and empowered when we do set aside time to be good to our bodies. Many times, I found myself choosing not to workout because I didn't have "a whole hour." Realistically, I didn't need to have a whole hour, I just needed a good 30 minutes. 30 minutes to give back to myself...to recharge myself...to remind myself that in all the craziness that I matter and I'm WORTH it.

If your life is FULL, like mine and so many others, remember that YOU are WORTH taking care of. Get your good 30 minutes in, and a little more if you can! I promise you, that even when life is overwhelming, that special time will rejuvenate you.

It's been almost a year since my last blog post and about the same amount of time since I captured any of my thoughts and opinions in writing. So much has changed in one year...

My last post left you with a smile and a strong belief that everything would be okay. I had recently miscarried but had worked through the grieving process. I was excited about the upcoming year and I believed that God would give me and my husband another child.

Fast forward to NOW...

This morning, I strapped my 6 week old son, Jayce, tightly into his stroller, put on my workout gear and went for a run. The sun barely made it through the thick clouds that covered the sky. You wouldn't have been able to tell it was a cloudy day by looking at me. I smiled at everyone that passed us by! God's goodness was on my mind. I still cannot believe that on Mother's day last year, in the early hours of the morning, I was in the ER, going through the painful process of losing my baby. This year, on Mother's day, I was holding my precious new baby and Josiah, our oldest son. As I ran, snap shots of significant moments flashed in my mind. Moments of pain, moments of faith, moments of laughter, praise, and gratitude. While the past year held some of the most challenging moments of my life, God also gave me some of the most beautiful gifts ever. I am so thankful.

I'm not sure what changed in me today that pushed me to begin to write again, but I'm glad that I was inspired to share.

If you are in one of those painful moments, remember that you will get through. All the pain can never outweigh the love that surrounds you in God's presence. When the moment seems hopeless, He is there and can see past the pain even when you can't. Brighter days are always ahead.
Instead of letting disappointment or fear take over, I’m determined to learn from every experience and move on with positivity, joy and hope. I haven’t blogged because I wasn’t ready to share, but now, I know that I can share my experience in the hope of encouraging any one else who has been through or will go through a similar situation.
This past March, my husband and I were thrilled to find out we were expecting another baby. Like most newly pregnant women, I was hesitant to share the news and waited until after our first official appointment. Seeing that little heart beat on the ultrasound at the 8 week appointment, put me in awe again of God’s amazing creation. Everything looked great with the baby and over the next few weeks, we began to tell close friends and family our news.
Time flew by and before I knew it, it was time for our 12 week appointment. I went to work, talked with friends, felt great and walked into the doctor’s office around 330pm. During the ultrasound, the doctor couldn’t find that precious little heartbeat. A few minutes later, she confirmed that we had lost our baby. At her news, I felt sick, sad and disappointed. In that moment, I also decided that I was going to get through this and I was going to praise God through the pain. That night was the hardest night of my life. I won’t go into detail, but I was glad when the morning came. The next 3 weeks were beyond difficult, but that 4th week was a turning point. I was back in a regular workout routine, and I was much more at peace about the loss of the baby.
Shortly after I was back into my routine, I injured my back to the point where I was unable to walk for 2 days. I couldn’t get up, lift my baby, cook, clean…nothing. I literally felt like I was finally back in my groove and then THIS? My doctor said that is would probably be 4-6 weeks before I would be able to go back to lifting and possibly 3 weeks before I would be able to run. I don’t think I had ever felt so deflated and disappointed in my life. As if the miscarriage wasn’t enough…now my ability to do what I love was gone! I really struggled at this point because I felt I had lost control. I couldn’t control my body and the miscarriage and I couldn’t control the fact that I had to rest due to the back injury. The funny thing is that sometimes it takes periods where control is lost in order for God to get your attention. I had to realize all over again that my identity was NOT found in fitness or being a mom but it is found in who God says I am.
He says that I am his daughter. That I am loved. That I am precious and special. That HE will work all things together for my good. He says that I am an overcomer and more than a conqueror. He says that I am blessed. He says that His plans for me are perfect and that He will take my mourning and turn it into gladness. He says that I am healed. God is so good!
Today, I am still recovering from the back injury but I am running every other day! I am excited about the future in every aspect of my life from family to fitness. I know that this was a hard season, but it doesn’t define my life or take away from the blessings in my future.
Oh, and about this picture…I was feeling betrayed by my body after losing the baby and just plain pissed off after the back injury. Then one day, I decided that I had to appreciate my body again and that was a step toward my healing and my attitude change. I took this picture as a symbol to me that I am beautiful and my body is beautiful even after all it went through. Praise God for new beginnings!!
Give your motivation a boost by trying these 3 suggestions!

1. Buy the newest edition of your favorite workout magazine- When I need a little boost, I go pick up the latest copy of Muscle and Fitness Hers or Oxygen Magazine. The stories, pictures, recipes and workouts remind me of my fitness goals and get me excited about my progress! Reading the stories shared by others also lets me know that I am NOT the only one going through challenges. Usually, I can find great ideas that give me the jump start I need.

2. Set up a new form of accountability- Set up “fitness checks” with a friend, make a weight tracker and put it up on your mirror, or start using a food log app on your phone! Most people will be motivated to start or continue towards a fitness goal is there is someone else checking up on you. I started a check in group with my co-workers! We share workouts, thoughts and encouragement as well as writing our weekly weight loss on a poster that we made.

3. Add in something NEW- Get online, find a new workout and try it out! Maybe you just need a new pair of workout pants to feel cute at the gym or a new gym bag. If a new change motivates you, then change something! You don’t HAVE to spend money or do a total overhaul. One fresh new thing, small or large, can change your perspective and your motivation level.

Often times, we dream of things we want to achieve and are so quick to disqualify ourselves as being someone able to achieve. Every time we disqualify ourselves or tell ourselves that we are not good enough, we are reinforcing a mentality that WILL hold us back from so many amazing opportunites and experiences. All goals are within reach if we believe we can achieve them, stay focused and work dillegently at each step on the way to achieveing the dream. No one ever said it would be easy but EVERYONE who stays the course and sacrifices in order to achieve says it WAS ALL WORTH IT.

It's time to stop doubting yourself. You are more than capable. Your goals and dreams are within reach. Believe in yourself and take that first step toward success.

Jada Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09441998486835520066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530734511910013128.post-44066340598340943042013-02-11T15:17:00.000-08:002013-02-11T15:17:00.672-08:00Quit Thinking. Start Doing. It’s hilarious to me that the inspiration for this blog came from a tv show. I recently became addicted to the show “Nashville” that tells the story of an established country icon and a rising young country star who learn that life, business and love can be a tricky combination. One episode has a scene where the rising young star is given the advice to “quit thinking and start doing” and it inspires her to embrace a more authentic type of performance. Anyway, I wasn’t moved by the performance on the show, BUT the phrase “quit thinking and start doing” jumped out at me.

Honestly, that phrase convicted me a little bit. My brain automatically related it to fitness (which happens a lot) and my goals. I thought of all the times a thought about the goals I had, the body I wanted, the way I wanted to be able to wear my bikini and feel totally comfortable at a moments notice. Then I asked myself how many times I STOPPED at the initial thought. Did I DO anything about the thought? Did I follow my workout and eating plan that day? Did I find some extra motivation to post and keep me focused on my goals? Did I have a tough conversation with a trusted “fit-friend” about my lack of dedication or weak moment?

There are many times, especially in the last month where I let myself STOP at the thought. I have faced a few personal challenges this past month and there have been some tough days. While challenges will come and go in life and a few days off may be necessary, we cannot let a challenge KEEP us down. This month, I let the challenge linger a little too long and that caused me to stop at the thought. But, no more. I’m done just thinking about my goals or giving a half-hearted attempt to complete them. I’m done using my brain power to go over goals that are already established. It’s time to put some action behind my desire! From here on out I am no longer JUST a thinker…I’m a doer. And each step I take moves me closer to where I want to be.
Some of my friends, co-workers and acquaintances are shocked when I tell them I only spend an average of 1 hour in the gym, 6 days a week. Many assume that I spend 2 or 3 hours a day in the gym!!! WHO HAS TIME FOR THAT?? I definitely don’t and if you are are a person on the move, YOU probably don’t have 3 extra hours to spend in the gym either!
It is surprising just how many are under the misconception that time in the gym is more valuable than intensity! If you are smart about your workouts, you can achieve your weight loss and /or strength goals with 60 minutes of gym time or less. Here are 3 key things to remember in order to get the MOST out of your time at the gym…
1. WORK HARDER NOT LONGER- Intensity is the KEY! In order to get the most out of your workouts in the shortest period of time you must turn up your intensity. Every repetition should be complete with your best effort! Take enough time to be sure you are using correct form, but DO NOT move slowly through your workouts. If you are lifting, choose a weight where you can JUST BARELY complete your assigned number of reps and power through your sets. If you are doing cardio, push yourself using maximum effort and use intervals every chance you get!
2. GET THE RIGHT SUPPLEMENTS- There are many supplements that can set your body up to be the fat burning, muscle building machine that it was created to be. Vitamin and mineral supplements help lay a foundation so that when you push your body, it can respond and function at it’s best! At the very minimum, incorporate a multi-vitamin and fatty acid supplement into your daily routine. If you are strength training, think about adding in BCAA’s, Glutamine, HMB and protein powder into your routine as well to set yourself up for optimal results. Check out Top Secret Nutrition’s product line! I love their whey protein and BCAA powder. Also, check out www.HMB.org to find out more about supplementing HMB.
3. KEEP YOUR EATING IN CHECK- Eating clean is essential to a successful weight loss and strength training program. Consistency is the key and “balancing it out” NEVER works! Instead of eating a donut a day and thinking that your evening run will even out the calories, find clean foods that you love and eat those consistently. Make your workouts can be something you enjoy, not something you have to do in order to burn off your bad choices. It’s completely fine to have a treat meal once in a while, but a daily treat or cheat will sabotage your efforts and keep you away from your goals.
Jada Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09441998486835520066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530734511910013128.post-819459615970040432013-01-15T10:08:00.001-08:002013-01-15T10:08:09.066-08:00Pushing Through when Life Happens...For the most part, consistency is not a problem for me. I love the gym and I love how working out and eating well make me feel. Even when I have days that I don't particularly FEEL like getting up early to workout or hitting the gym after work, I decide that my feelings are temporary and my commitment is more important. BUT, there are times that come in life that rock you to your core and you, like me, my lose the will or motivation to do what you know you should. So how do we handle experiencing a great loss or a personal tragedy while continuing to move forward in our health and fitness? Here are 4 keys to pushing through and overcoming those tough moments...

1. Fuel your faith- During the hardest times, I refocus by reading and declaring God's promises to me! I'm constantly searching for scriptures on my phone or computer that remind me of God's goodness, His power, His plan and purpose for my life! Focusing on the fact that God says His plan for me is perfect and all things work together for my good, truly encourages me even in the hardest moments.

2. Give yourself a break- If you are like me, even one day away from the gym can have you feeling a little guilty (just being honest). But, in my toughest times, I realize that I benefit from a day or two away from the gym. Instead, I choose to spend the extra time with family or friends who love me and can encourage me. I am also one of those people who want everything to be fixed immediately! If I am having a hard day, I get frustrated if I can't change my attitude right then. But, during the toughest moments, I have also found that I have to let myself grieve, face the situation and only then can I move on.

3. Choose your food wisely- Many of us, especially women, turn to food for comfort in tough times. During those intense moments, you may think that sitting on the couch with that donut or ice cream will help, but it will only hurt you! In order to keep our energy up during the hard times, we MUST stay consistent with clean eating. Whether you are eating in or out, this is the time to COMMIT to making wise food choices in order to feel your best.

4. Choose to be thankful- When life throws us a challenge, its very easy to let the challenge become the focus and forget about ALL the other things that we have to be thankful for. Don't magnify your tragedy so that it's bigger than everything else in your life. When I am in a tough moment, I have a habit of making a list of things I am thankful for in my life. Going through my "Thankful For" List always puts a smile on my face and reminds me that THIS moment may be hard, but there is so much to be thankful for and so much better on the way!

Keep smiling!

It’s a new year and hopefully a time for new goals, renewed vision and lots of excitement. I actually had a friend who resolved to gain 20 pounds this year. She said it was basically a win/win for her. I laughed as she explained that if she gains 20 pounds, she keeps her new year’s resolution BUT if she loses 20 pounds then she looks great and feels great about herself so either way, she wins. It’s those kind of resolutions that can keep us in limbo and keep us from experiencing the excitement and strength that comes from achieving our goals. But how do we go from making half-hearted resolutions to creating meaningful, achievable goals? I believe the only way to do that is to tie your goals, specifically your fitness goals to your purpose.

I’m not trying to make a grandiose statement or come off sounding like I have the key to fitness success. What I can say is that I have realized the connection of my own health to my purpose and it has changed the way I look at my workouts. I believe that my purpose includes being a great mother, wife, middle school teacher and fitness coach. In order to truly be my best in these areas and reach my goals in each of these areas, it is important for me to be in great health. In order to be a great mom, I need to do all I can to keep up with my son physically and I need to do all I can in order to be there for him long term. That means my workouts today and the food I put in my body today and the consistency in doing these things well effect the outcome of my purpose and goals. Realizing this connection not only inspires me to organize my workouts and meals but it also gives me the motivation to do what I need to do!

When YOU can see how your health is directly connected to your purpose, it will not only change your workouts but it will change your life.
Lately, I have been getting a lot of questions regarding the supplements that I take to help by body perform at it’s highest level. I believe that the proper supplementation program is essential to great workouts and great physiques. Everyone has different needs and may require different supplementation routines but there are a few key things I take that can be beneficial to pretty much everyone. Here are the main staples in my supplementation program…

1. A good multi-vitamin (I LOVE Top Secret Nutrition’s Active Extreme)- Taking a multi-vitamin helps you to meet nutritional needs that you may not get from your food.
2. A fatty acid supplement (I LOVE Top Secret Nutrition’s Fish Oil& CLA and MRM’s Smartblend)- These healthy fats stimulate fat burning enzymes and help to balance a diet while maintaining healthy joints, cell membrane structure and overall health.
3. Extra Vitamin C- vitamin C helps helps strengthen the immune system, has antioxidant properties, can help lower blood pressure and lessens the effects of the common cold!
4. Protein Powder (I LOVE Top Secret Nutrition’s Whey Protein Powder)- You need protein to build lean muscle! I get a lot of protein from the foods I eat but I also incorporate shakes to get enough protein to build that muscle.
5. L-Carintine (I LOVE Top Secret Nutrition’s L-Carintine w/Green Coffee)- L-carintine is said to have a hand in stimulating the usage of fat for energy. I have experienced positive results in using L-carintine. I usually take it 20 minutes before each cardio session.

AND MY FAVORITE SUPPLEMENT…
6. HMB (I use the Optimum Nutrition HMB)- HMB is a supplement that helps increase lean muscle mass and also helps to retain your hard earned muscle! This is my favorite supplement in my routine! This is not a supplement that you feel immediately (like caffeine) but it is a supplement that begins to change your body over time. I usually start to see effects within 4 weeks of supplementing consistently. HMB works best with a regular strength training and cardio workout routine. Don’t expect to see changes with this OR ANY supplement if you are not doing your part in your workouts and diet.

I hope this information helps!!
Well, I DID IT!!!! I have officially accomplished my goal of getting back on stage at an NPC competition within 6 months of my baby being born! This past Saturday, I competed at the NPC Excaliber in Culver City. This was my first show since July of 2011 and I couldn’t wait to get on stage.

The morning of the show was as perfect as could be! I sat there laughing with my friend and makeup artist, Jamie, as my husband and son sat on the couch watching my transformation. With my make-up done, hair flowing and tan sparkling, I made my way to the venue. My phone continued the chirp the entire morning with messages of support and encouragement. I found a seat in the balcony next to my husband, my dad and my son, and waited patiently for my group to go on stage.

Finally it was time. My time!! My heels clicked as my class walked behind the thick black curtain hanging backstage. We lined up at stage left and walked one by one to the center, showing our poses and the physiques we worked so hard for. My smile was brighter than the spotlights that shined on me as I made my way to the center of the stage. That moment was one of the best that I have ever experienced in my life. At this time last year, I was about 3 months pregnant and watching the competitors on the stage at the 2011 Excaliber show. I was thinking of my goal that I made to compete by the time the little baby inside me was 6 months old and how excited I was by the challenge. To be walking on the stage, one year later and accomplishing my goal was absolutely amazing! I gazed into the audience and focused in on my husband and my little boy smiling up at me. At that moment, I felt like I had won. I didn’t need to come home with a trophy because I was staring at the best prize I could ever ask for.

My moment on stage came to an end, but my smile didn’t fade for the rest the day. I am so thankful for the support of my husband through this time. There were many moments where I was tired or discouraged and he was right there to give me the hug OR the kick in the butt I needed. I’m also very thankful for my coaches at Team Bombshell…especially Coach V.

I hope that everyone who reads this part of my journey is encouraged and motivated to continue towards their personal goals. I thank God for giving me strength everyday to continue to pursue my goals while excelling in the responsibilities that I face daily.
While this journey is ending, a new one is beginning. The show goes on…
